Every year when the days are warm but the nights are still cold, IAIS holds its annual Maple Sugaring Festival. Enjoy pancakes made by IAIS staff, local maple syrup, coffee and orange juice (served from 11am-1pm) and learn how local Native Americans traditionally made maple syrup. Throughout the day Jim Dina will demonstrate the technique of collecting sap and boiling it down into syrup as he discusses its importance to Native American culture. Children?s activities will run from 1-3pm.

The workshop will feature rhythm, pulse, and improvisational exercises towards developing confidence and dexterity. Traditional rhythms from around the world will be explored in a joyful, safe and non-competitive atmosphere. Participants are asked to bring a drum if they have one. A limited number will be available. John Marshall is a percussionist who performs on concert stages, radio, television and in film. His performances include drumming traditions of the Middle East, North and South India, West Africa, Central Asia and the Caribbean. He performs with the classical/jazz/world ensemble, Ufonia. Sunday, 12 noon (lunch) to 4 pm. Fee: $35 (includes lunch). Each participant may bring a friend for $20 payable with registration.
